Fr. Bernard McCoy:
"Prayer & Work" in the current issue of Angels
on Earth
Fr. BERNARD McCOY wears many hats (or should we say hoods?) at Spring Bank abbey.
“One of my favorite titles is Hundmeister, Master of the Hounds,” he says. He has his hands full with the monks’ dogs, Luxor and Ludwig. Luxor is a Pharaoh Hound, a breed with a history thousands of years older than the monastic order itself—the dogs date back to ancient Egypt. No wonder Luxor feels like he runs the place. He’s learned to open all the monastery doors. Ludwig, his friendly rival for attention, is a Doberman Pinscher. Both dogs are in command of the monastery, but Fr. Bernard says they share one great fear:
“Our upright vacuum cleaner.” Visit the LaserMonks

Wanda Rosseland:
"Call of the Meadowlark"
in the current issue of Angels
on Earth
If you see cattle or horses grazing in a field,
chances are there will be a meadowlark nearby, probably standing proudly on
a fencepost with his yellow vest turned toward the sun. These birds claimed
America’s grasslands long before there were fence posts. The first
meadowlarks came to the Midwest right behind the retreating glaciers of the
ice age. If a female comes near, the bird will point his beak in the air,
swell out his colorful chest and flick his wings behind his back, singing
and leaping up and down to get her attention. Hear the meadowlark’s song:

Virginia Schoenthaler:
"Out of the Woods" in the current issue of Angels
on Earth
Seven years later, VIRGINIA SCHOENTHALER is happy to report David is doing well and working on plans for the future. “He’s studying to
be a travel nurse,” Virginia says. But don’t think his guardian angel will be getting any time off. That means David will go to different
places throughout the year, wherever he’s needed. “He might work at a ski resort in the winter and a SCUBA school in the summer, for
instance,” Virginia explains. “And during his time off he can ski and SCUBA himself. He’s hoping to get a chance to hang glide too.”
David still loves excitement,
but he’s left trouble behind. Visit

Debra Valdovinos:
"One More Day" in the current issue of Angels
on Earth
DEBRA VALDOVINOS reports that her grandson, Nodin, is one beautiful baby—and she’s not the only one who thinks so. In 2008 he was featured in the
“Cute Kids Calender,” which raises money for Midwest Athletes Against Childhood Cancer. This charitable organization has been supporting research for
childhood cancer treatment since 1976. “The MACC fund was so important to us when Janelle was sick,” says Debra. “Seeing Nodin in the calendar is like
coming full circle.
They were there for us. Now we get to be there for them.” For more
